We went to New Orleans at the end of March - our first trip together without Frances! Linda, Jeff, and Cassandra were kind enough to take Frances for an entire week.
Pictures:
Day 1
We arrived on Sunday late afternoon in New Orleans. We dumped our bags at our hotel, the Omni Royale New Orleans, and immediately went to Bourbon street to check out the sights. We saw some pretty crazy things, including:
- A person, stroller, and fake baby all painted metallic silver
- A guy getting arrested
- Lots of drunk people and people drinking on the streets
We headed back to the hotel for a rest, and spent some time on the roof in the sunshine. Ate jambalaya and went to a jazz bar, unfortunately at a place with a lot of much older people (read: senior citizens) and almost fell asleep.
Day 2
Kicked off the day with a city sightseeing tour of the city. It was a VERY windy. Our tour visited the French Quarter, the Garden District, Treme, St. Charles, and Magazine Street.
We visited the areas hit by hurricane Katrina. Katrina hit in 2005. 1500 people were killed, mostly of heat related illnesses. 7 babies were born at the stadium, which was converted into a makeshift hospital. 25000 people lived in the Dome with the red cross efforts. The city is 50% back to it's normal population, depending on who you ask. Hollywood celebrities are rebuilding areas of the city.
We visited one of the city's cemeteries - apparently all are above ground, due to the climate and hurricane issues - and visited downtown and the warehouse district.
After the tour, we visited the French Market and stopped for lunch. We napped and then had a webcam visit with Frances!
We headed Frenchmen street to see some jazz. We had fish tacos a Mexican restaurant, Tomatillos. After dinner, we went to TBD for a jazz show. Suddenly realizing we were again among all of the old people, we went home.
Day 3
We slept in - sooo nice! - and I went for a run along the riverwalk. It was very humid. We took a bus out of the city and went on a swamp tour. We saw some amazing wildlife - see the photos - including alligators! Justin and I both held a baby alligator.
We napped again, then went to dinner on Bourbon Street again, at a restaurant with a fun outside courtyard. We had fried alligator and then we walked the strop on Bourbon Street. Justin got a hurricane-to-go, I got a beer-to-go, and we watched karaoke.
Day 4
Today was the shopping day. We walked to Magazine street, covering most of the city, and I explored almost all day. It was really fun; they have great antique shops and clothing boutiques. We took the cable car home down St. Charles street, and then we did a webcam with Frances and the Leighs.
It poured, so we stuck on Bourbon street. When it let up, we headed back to Frenchmen Street and caught the tail end of a great concert at Sing Sing.
Day 5
We had planned to do a plantation tour this day, but we messed up the times. It was our first hot day, so we swam and relaxed. Visited the French market, and considered going to a movie. Went to dinner at an Oyster bar and had fried oysters, scallops, and jambalaya again. Went out dancing!
Day 6
Headed home. Stuck in Denver overnight.
Day 7
We saw Frances again!
